POND IN A BOWL
Pond in a Bowl is a free outdoor sculpture and poetry garden exhibition traveling from 7th Ave. Garden (Central Los Angeles, CA) June 21-28, 2025, to Fort Worden (Port Townsend, WA) in September 2025 during Dawn Cerny's month-long Centrum residency. Seattle artist Cerny creates six new sculptures serving as bird feeders, pollinator rest stops and poetry kiosks, while writer Ed Steck contributes texts printed on postcards and trifold pamphlets for visitors to take. Cerny's sculptures hold water, birdseed and nest-building materials, conceiving outdoor art as sites for collaboration with mutable conditions—human, animal, plant and insect—where light and place endlessly change.
This project connects to the environmental and social ecology of gardens and parks as places inviting hospitality, rest and survival. The Los Angeles iteration, hosted by artist David Horvitz at his converted vacant lot garden, features temporary sculptures by Dawn Cerny, Ed Steck, Lukas Geronimus and Bristol Hayward-Hughes, with public readings and gatherings from 5:00 PM to sunset. The Fort Worden iteration continues with Cerny, Hayward-Hughes and Steck's bird feeder and poetry kiosk sculptures during Cerny's September residency.
