Sacred Steps: Movement, Memory, and Black Expression

Sacred Steps: Movement, Memory, and Black Expression is a community-based, intergenerational arts showcase designed to highlight the cultural significance of movement within Black and BIPOC communities. The project brings together youth, collegiate, and community performers to present a dynamic program of embodied storytelling through dance and movement.

Rooted in the traditions of the African diaspora, the showcase emphasizes the role of rhythm, movement, and collective expression as forms of cultural preservation, resistance, and identity. While centering Black cultural origins and influence, the event remains inclusive of diverse movement traditions that exist within and alongside these lineages.

A distinguishing feature of the project is its integration of performance and education. Each participating group will offer a brief contextual introduction prior to their performance, sharing the origins, cultural significance, and personal connections tied to their art form. This approach transforms the event into an immersive experience that deepens audience understanding and engagement.

The showcase will feature youth drill teams, college step teams, and dance groups representing styles such as hip hop, tap, jazz, ballet, modern, and cheer. By placing youth performers alongside more experienced artists, the project highlights intergenerational cultural transmission and positions young people as active cultural carriers.

Sacred Steps is designed as an accessible, community-centered event that uplifts underrepresented voices, fosters cultural pride, and creates space for meaningful connection through the arts.
